HOSFORD

My wife's great grandfather, Thomas HOSFORD, was born in Co. Cork, Ireland in 1815 to Jonathan HOSFORD and Sophia CREED.

He married an Anna Maria HALL (1827-1899) in 1852 at Castlemartyr, Co. Cork, Ireland.  They travelled to Sydney, NSW, Australia, arriving in December 1852, only 2 weeks before their 1st child, Jonathan Joseph Bandon HOSFORD (my wife's grandfather) was born in 1853.  Thomas worked for the gaol system, initially at Cockatoo Island, Sydney, NSW & then becoming Governor at Goulburn Gaol in NSW, where he unfortunately died in 1869, aged 54 years of age. There was a rumour that he died from injuries received during a gaol riot, but newspaper articles indicate he died from lung congestion after attending a friend’s funeral in the rain.  He was buried in Goulburn but his grave cannot be located.

Their seven children (the 1st four born at Cockatoo Island, Sydney, NSW and the other three at Goulburn, NSW) were:

Jonathan Joseph Bandon HOSFORD married Sarah Elizabeth BRANSCOMBE in Mudgee, NSW, Australia in 1879. He was a Trades Overseer in the NSW prison system, serving at Mudgee, Bathurst & Parramatta. See BRANSCOMBE for details of the family.

Sarah Elizabeth (Branscombe) HOSFORD

They had 10 children: Anne Marie Charlotte (1882-1978), Thomas William (1883-1971), Jonathan Herbert (1885-1964), Joseph Ernest (1887-1965) & George (1889-1971) born at Mudgee, NSW, then Frank Branscombe (1890-1963), Rowland (1891-1966), Wilfred Septimus (1893-1968), Gladys Victoria Lillian May (1898-1976) & Dorothy Winifred Branscombe (1899-1970) (my wife's mother), born at Bathurst, NSW.
