MOORE
My great grandmother, Martha Millie MOORE,
was born in Strawberry Hills, Sydney, NSW, Australia, in 1863. She was the 5th child and 3rd
daughter of John Richard MOORE, who arrived in the colony of NSW on 13 February
1846 from England.
John Richard MOORE, who was born in 1826 at Bermondsey, Surrey, England, had 2 marriages. The first was to Anna Hume Ferguson EDINGTON
on 9 August 1848 at St. Andrew's Scots Church in Sydney, NSW, from which they
had 2 children:
Unfortunately, Anna
died and was buried on 3 March 1854.
Subsequently,
John Richard MOORE married on 28 November 1854 in Scots Presbyterian Church,
Sydney to Mary Ann GREGG.
They had ten children:
John Richard MOORE died on 1 March 1894 and
Mary Anne (GREGG) MOORE on 18 January 1915. John over his career held many positions, such
as Bookkeeper, Accountant, Mercantile Clerk and Journalist.
Martha Millie MOORE married Louis Godfrey ALEXANDER, a Photographer, in Sydney in 1882. They lived initially at Roma, Queensland & later at Sydney, NSW.
They had 13 children (see ALEXANDER for details). Their eldest child, Percy Louis Godfrey ALEXANDER, was my grandfather.
Mary Ann GREGG was one of five children who emigrated to Sydney from County Cavan,
Ireland. She arrived in 1851. Her eldest brother, James arrived in 1841, whilst
her 2 sisters came together in 1854. A
younger brother, John, arrived in 1874. Presumably,
the Irish potato famine and the hope of a better life encouraged them to come.
